Sky Raider

The Big Screen, One Day.

SkyRaider feels like a life long project. I initially got the idea while I was at the University of Miami. I was reading a back issue of American Cinematographer and I came across an interview with Steven Spielberg and George Lucas on the making of Raiders of the Lost Arc. They stated how the idea came from the cliffhanger serials that were made when they were kids. So, I started researching and decided to make my own superhero cliffhanger based on radio serials of the 1930's.

In the short film my aim was to bring a radio show to life. I came up with the character Sky Raider, named after a plane that was in Vietnam, and Black Jack Scorcher. Before comitting a murder BlackJack has the tendancy to flip through his deck of cards to pull out an Ace, and Jack of Spades, and says, "Alright boys, SCORCH'IM." I shot the film on 35mm and cut it on a flat bed they let me use at UM. I used some bi-packing effects created on an Oxberry printer after doing some manual rotoscoping on an animation stand. It was the same process they used to make Star Wars - and I was only able to get about 12 useful frames out of the process which I stuck in the film.

Good vs. Evil

This story has stuck with me since the Winter of 1996 all the way until now, 2007. It went through countless drafts. It all started with a simple story of two characters, one idea - good vs. evil. Then as I started writing the story, I found that it's not that simple. They knew each other as kids. They were actually best friends, until a dramatic incident tore them apart. They don't meet again until many years later after life takes them both in two separate directions. I love this story more than anything I have ever done and hope one day to see it, or some variation of it, on the big screen.
